Operating with curatorial open-mindedness is a constant for Boswijk, whose career has been guided by what is now a well-honed creative intuition. Olaf’s professional pursuits began in Amsterdam over two decades ago as a journalist and radio host, driven by a desire to share beloved audio selections far and wide. Assuming the role of music director and sometime resident DJ at Club 11, Olaf transformed his burgeoning aural aesthetics into tangible forms. From Club 11’s embers, seeking to build the kind of place he could not find elsewhere in the city, Trouw was born. Speak to virtually any Amsterdam electronic artist or DJ who came of age in the 2010s, and you will hear the venue mentioned with a special reverence. This is a testament to Trouw’s vital role as a world-renowned club, led by the vision of co-founder and owner Boswijk. Likewise, De School, which he also co-founded, is held in similar esteem.
A singular ability to cultivate spaces for creatives to flourish can be felt across all of his endeavours. In search of adventures farther flung, after laying the groundwork for De School, Boswijk set off in a camper van across North and South America, beaming out roadtrip dispatches in his Radio Balthasar podcast. In 2018, he landed in Chile, and soon after set-up Valley Of The Possible, a centre for regenerative culture. Nestled in a remote valley next to the Sierra Nevada volcano, the residency program invited and challenged artists, scientists, thinkers, and makers to imagine alternative perspectives on our relationship with the natural world.

Inspired by Olaf’s transatlantic galavanting, he possesses an even greater freedom in his work than formative days, which incorporates influences from every corner of the globe. In 2020, the spark for his coaching practice began. Wading through the pandemic’s disconnect and ennui, as ever Boswijk sought out different ways to build connection with people. This took shape in the form of walk and talks during the pandemic, and online mentoring sessions, before becoming a full-scale coaching practice. Tapping into long-standing interests in philosophy, yoga, meditation, mindfulness and emotional intelligence, alongside his vast background in culture, Olaf’s coaching encapsulates an inimitable perspective and depth. After many years shaping artistic industries with his distinct creative voice, he is now helping people grow confidence in themselves, tracing new paths of their own.
PAST AND PRESENT PROJECTS
-
VALLEY OF THE POSSIBLE — Olaf is the co-founder of Valley of the Possible: an artist residency and centre for regenerative culture in the Chilean Andes. Started in 2019 together with Mirla Klijn, Valley of the Possible invites and challenges artists, scientists, thinkers, and makers to envision alternative perspectives on our relationship with the natural world. Through carefully curated programs, in collaboration with local universities, art institutions, and Indigenous communities, a diverse cohort of international participants gather annually for 6 weeks of research, reflection, and knowledge-sharing. The objective of the program is to constructively contribute to decolonial, regenerative, and ecological cultures amidst an era of societal collapse. Valley of the Possible is currently on hiatus, while exploring possibilities to relocate the centre to the Netherlands.

DE SCHOOL — After establishing and running TrouwAmsterdam between 2009 and 2015, Olaf co-founded its successor, De School, alongside Ernst Mertens and Jochem Doornbusch. Widely recognized as one of the world’s best electronic clubs of its time, De School ran from 2016 until 2024. De School was a 1500-capacity venue converted from a former technical school site, and featured a club with a 24-hour permit, live music spot, restaurant, café, gym, and art space – with cultural programming throughout. As with 11 and Trouw, De School was a temporary project initiated by Post CS.

TROUW — Building on the success of its precursor 11, Olaf co-founded TrouwAmsterdam in a former newspaper printing factory in Amsterdam together with Maike Vernooij and Daan Steures. Trouw was a world renowned space for electronic music, a restaurant, music label and contemporary art space and the first ever club in the Netherlands to have a 24-hour licence. Like its predecessor 11, and successor De School, Trouw was a temporary project initiated by Post CS.

CLUB 11 — Officially called 11 | restaurant_bar_club, 11 was a temporary restaurant, club, and art space that laid much of the groundwork of putting Amsterdam’s club culture on the international map. Club 11, as it was often referred to, was located on the 11th floor of the former National Post Distribution Centre (Post CS), next to the Amsterdam Central Station. The bottom floors of the Post CS building temporarily housed the Stedelijk Museum for contemporary art, while the other floors were filled with architects, designers, and other creatives. Running from 2004 until 2008, Club 11 was founded by Brian Boswijk, Koen Vollaers, Lex Breet, Sander Overeinder, and Jaymz Pool. Olaf served as music director from 2005 until 2008.
